Flash flood devastates Nepal, isolating communities across the Himalayas

A devastating flash flood in Nepal has left communities grieving, isolated, and in urgent need of support. Triggered by a glacier ice avalanche and earthquake activity along the Tibetan plateau, floodwaters surged down the Bhote Koshi River on August 26, causing widespread destruction and loss of life across the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.

As search and rescue efforts continue, the community is grappling with entire sections of critical infrastructure that have been swept away, including dozens of road and cable bridges. Nearly 30 miles of the primary highway supplying Kathmandu with food, fuel, and essential goods has been severely damaged, leaving many communities cut off from vital resources.

Foursquare Disaster Relief is coordinating directly with a trusted local partners to support both immediate relief efforts and long-term recovery planning. While some communities located above the flood zone remain accessible and stable, many families living in lower valleys have become unreachable due to widespread power outages, communication disruptions, and damaged transportation routes.

Local partners are identifying safe pathways into affected mountain regions and working to deliver financial assistance to vulnerable families. We are providing financial support, coordinating through leaders, and collaborating with trusted humanitarian partners to ensure aid reaches communities efficiently and responsibly.

As supply chains remain disrupted and isolated communities face growing shortages of food, fuel, and essential goods, the need for ongoing support is expected to increase significantly in the weeks ahead.
